Since Marti and Bridget have brought us all together, why don't they (or why don't you, Marti or Bridget) tell us how they met and decided to start Aeon. For instance, how long did it take between planning the magazine and the first issue?

Cheers,

I met Marti at William Beaumont General Hospital in El Paso Texas. She was very small at the time, but kind of cute. When I left, I took her home with me, and decided to keep her. Then I gave her three little brothers, and she didn't speak to me for years.

Fortunately she forgave me in time, and we both went on to work as writers and editors in the entertainment software industry, and also to collaborate on some short stories ("Kidnapped by Aliens!" was published by Tomorrow SF) in addition to each of us writing and selling fiction on her own. A few years ago we found ourselves in Seattle, she working for RealNetworks and me for an agency that contracted me out to Microsoft. My last job there was on the team that developed Microsoft Reader, and it was such an awesome reading platform that we decided to publish for it. That was (and is) Scorpius Digital Publishing, founded in 2000 by yours (and yours) truly.

Fast forward to 2004 and we're at the Nebulas here in Seattle, which makes it April something - I couldn't have told you the date 'cause I had just flown in from the Eastercon in Blackpool and left most of my brain in that time zone, but I realized that after years of electronic publishing getting no love, two of the finalist stories (and one the previous year, I believe) had been published in SciFiction. Marti remarked when we discussed this development with a few friends, that the best way to deliver an electronic publication might be as an ebook, something with which we had a bit of experience.

When my brain arrived (it had missed the plane and hopped a cargo ship) I proposed this venture. She didn't need convincing, as insanity runs in the family. To prove my point, it was now the first of May and to properly introduce this new ebook magazine thing we'd need to have the first issue ready some time in advance of the World Fantasy Convention in Tempe at the end of October. We had no name, no website, no stories, and no plan. We went to work and got all that stuff, and the rest is not only history but the reason we're all in this tribe.

    Welcome, all of you.

    Bridget

Thank you for the history (and I would have posted this thank-you earlier if not for one of those "life" problems which gets in the way of everything).

So you and Marti had a very natural meeting.

A further question for you: Since you're adept at electronic forms of publication, why don't you have a "mini" Aeon for download fun? The samples you posted thus far--unless I've missed something (which is always possible)--are html.

      Cheers,

Yes, the teasers on our site are just to give a flavor of what's inside the issue. If we had more staff we might well be able to think about a downloadable mini. Right now we're... if not overwhelmed, at least whelmed with what we do have to do. And we're ALWAYS behind with sending back streetmail subs.

But it's not at all a bad idea, Chet. Thanks.
