I'm leaving tribe.net in protest. They are not only censorship political speech and expression now, but they have a TOU which grants them all rights to content (writing, art, photography) we place on here. For example, I have a private tribe where I run a small writing group . . . everything posted to that tribe would belong to them now.
I was starting to get to know all of you here at Aeon and really enjoying the company of writers and editors . . . it's a community, better than any online e-mail list, group, board, or chatroom I've seen.
Unfortunately, I feel very strongly about this issue of censorship. I joined the military and fought in a war because I believed that there are things in our Constitution worth dying for. I won't be part of any organization in my private life (and tribe is a part of my private life) in which censorship is used.
I'll keep my profile for a week while I appoint new moderators for my tribes.
My profile blog has more explanation if you're interested.

Take a hard look at whos in the white house and u will see why there is censorship, this is another ploy by the goverment to snoop into ur private lives.....also how can Tribe get away with Owning stuff that you write?...dont they have to compinsate you for your efforts?
You are the author, under laws of copywrite it belongs to you, not them...right??
I look for a massive migration of unhappy people from this sinking ship called tribe.

Re: This is one I really regret.
Thu, January 19, 2006 - 10:14 AMIf you post it here under that TOU agreement, then they own the rights . . . while they don't claim ownership, I ask you what is the difference between owning the rights and owning the content? Legally there probably is some difference, but realistically and economically there isn't much. Further, it could probably be fought in court if a situation arises where it would be necessary, and the writer or artist would probably win (depending on all the variables of a legal battle), but it would cost a lot of money - - almost certainly more money than the market value of the content being stolen by tribe.
I've dropped all but a handful of my tribes . . . I'm deleting content now . . . I'll port my blog somewhere else in the next couple days (anyone have a good suggestion) . . . then I'll delete my profile.
I'm not encouraging or asking anyone to follow my lead . . . this is a personal decision. -

Re: This is one I really regret.
Thu, January 19, 2006 - 11:06 AMIt's something we all have to consider: is Tribe the best place for us, or should we be doing this someplace else? By the way, censorship aside, this new interface sucks rocks.
So we hate to see you go, Rick, but if you find a place we can tribe up without Tribe but with some of the same (useta be) ease of use and features, please let us know. And everyone else, feel free to chime in about whether you feel uncomfortable here and whether you know a better place. We're open to suggestion. -

Re: This is one I really regret.
Thu, January 19, 2006 - 11:12 AMI will, Bridget.
I had some really big plans here. One of the things I was about to launch was a tribe dedicated to classic short Science Fiction. I was going to lead the discussion of one story a week for 100 weeks (the top 100 stories of all time) and analyze the character, plot, setting, pacing, voice, style, etc. It would have been a lot of fun .. . like an extended and complete sci-fi literature course.
I have spent the past year obtaining all of those stories on the list and found the final one last week.
So much for timing.

Sat, January 21, 2006 - 11:50 AMI wonder if you could do a bulletin board on your website? I'm not sure how you would find time to administer it. Yahoo is another possibility.... I think we will all be thinking about it. Both issues Rick brings up are pretty disgusting.

Profile pages a lot like tribe's (with blogs, etc.) and linked into your Yahoo Group, which allows file uploads and emails posts. Might work at least for our purposes. -

Fri, January 27, 2006 - 11:44 AMAlso, I've set up an experimental Aeon "community" on LiveJournal. Does anyone have LJ experience? Looks like it might work well, too. Maybe even weller. :)
