We don't want this to be all about Aeon as much as we want it to be all about YOU, so please add to this news topic any sales or other writing or personal news you think we oughta know about. We want to hear what you're doing and what's happening for you.

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Fri, July 15, 2005 - 3:12 PMWell, hmm. Recent sales? Shadowed Realms (New Australian on-line flash fiction mag.)
But in what seems a new trend, I've received six emails from different magazines in the past couple weeks telling me that I'm "on their short list," and "we'll let you know in a couple weeks."
Sheesh. You can't argue with news like that, but on the other hand . . .
:-)

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Fri, July 15, 2005 - 4:36 PMJust moved to Seattle. Look at all these writers here! Damn, I better get on the stick.
Current writing includes a major portion of "Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination" for the Boston Museum of Science (www.mos.org/doc/1293). Today in a three-way conference between yours truly in Seattle, my producer in San Francisco, and the Boston team, I learned that James Earl Jones is interested in seeing the current draft of my script as the next step in deciding whether he will be its narrator. -

Sat, July 16, 2005 - 8:46 AMMy book is out. ACCORDING TO CROW was published by Five Star Books, and so far garnered some nice reviews. Links to reviews and online places that sell the book are at www.ekaterinasedia.com/novels.htm
Shocklines has autographed copies.
Also, the stunning image in my icon is the cover of the premiere issue of Jabberwocky, a new magazine/anthology of poetry and short fiction from Prime books (www.primebooks.net)

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Sun, July 17, 2005 - 7:13 PMJust found out that my publisher took an ad for the newest book (CURSE THE DARK, out now!) in the Village Voice, here in NYC. Very much a non-genre audience. Am still giggling-proud over that...
(also the Library Journal review that mentioned both Dan Brown and Umberto Eco in favorable comments of the above book)
And am just home from Necon, so the above may not be coherent. If not, sorry (and, B, I saw your e-mail and will respond after sleep restores some brain cells) -

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Mon, July 18, 2005 - 6:06 AMMost recent news is the sale of a novelette, "Empty Places," to Realms of Fantasy and a novella, HEREAFTER AND AFTER, to PS Publishing in the UK. Assuming everything is on schedule, the novella will be published as a signed, limited edition in late 2006. -
-
Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Mon, July 18, 2005 - 9:46 AMFor anyone who doesn't know, PS Publishing is an award-winning UK press run by Peter Crowther. They publish a limited number of superior novellas in limited editions, and have awards, award nominations, and critical praise they haven't even unfolded yet. A sale to these folks is golden. -

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Mon, July 18, 2005 - 5:01 PMI just sold, of all things, a romance to Double Dragon Press. (Yes, there's a fantastic element.) It's undergoing a title change, so I'll let folks know when I know more.

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Tue, July 19, 2005 - 6:21 AMLatest news? My story "The Queen's Wood" is in the latest issue of Realms of Fantasy, and my story "A Better Place" will be in a forthcoming issue. Also, I just sold a story I cowrote with Mikal Trimm to the new webzine, Son and Foe. Plenty of excitement here!

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Tue, July 19, 2005 - 6:56 AMMy most recent news:
My fantasy poem, "An Enchantment, With Apples" appeared in _OnSpec_ Spring 2005 issue, out this month.
A sale of a flash fiction piece, "The Mirror King", to _Flash Me Magazine_, and should appear in the July 31st, 2005 issue.
Finalist in the Writers of the Future Contest 2nd Quarter 2005 with "Come-From-Aways". It didn't win a top prize but there's still a chance it might be published in the next volume.

Story and novel sale!
Tue, July 19, 2005 - 12:47 PMBeen meaning to post here for a while, then got all humble...
First off, I'm happy to report that Aeon will be running my story "The Brotherhood of Trees" in an upcoming issue (maybe #6)!
Also, I learned over the Fourth of July holiday that my paranormal romance novel sold to Five Star Expression. The name of the book is Heart's Revenge, and it'll come out under a pseudonym, Julia C. Porter (because nobody would buy a romance written by a GUY, would they?). This will make my first novel publication.
Woo-hoo!

Re: Story and novel sale!
Tue, July 19, 2005 - 2:52 PMOk, I'll brag a bit too.
My first novel, "Between Worlds", is due out soon from Dragon Tooth Fantasy E-books, and my short story "Olive Branch," is the lead story in the current issue of The First Line.

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Tue, July 19, 2005 - 6:11 PMMy novel, FORMIDABLE ENEMY (Five Star), came out as the backup to Ms. Sedia's book. It garnered good reviews from Booklist and Library Journal, which pleased me. FE is also the featured SF book at Dear Readers for the two week period that started yesterday.

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Sun, July 24, 2005 - 11:46 AMWriting news? HAH! The last writing I did was Frank Wu's bio for Baycon. Writing bios for Frank is a lot of fun, but I want to make up my fictional characters.
One more week under the thumb of my evil manager, Spawn. Then I will be a free woman (until the money runs out).
Somebody give me a deadline. I can't function without deadlines anymore. Say, a month to send you a brand new story. To reject, but hey. It'll be a new story!
Oh--Gary belongs here, but never writes, so--did you hear he sold another one to Gordon? -
-
Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Sun, July 24, 2005 - 5:13 PMYeah, that Gary is a real bastard. I think you were there the day in Taos Fred Pohl was asked the question "What should go in a cover letter?" Without batting an eye, Fred said "I know where your children go to school." Either Gary knows where Gordon's children go to school or... <Gasp...!> He's just a wonderful writer.
And yes, your last story for us was SO wonderful and got such good attention from Locus that we'd love to see another. Have it to us on or before 25 August, or face the lash. It should feature something about romantic love in some fashion, 'cause even though the reading window is officially closed, the fact is we're still trying to fill three slots in the February issue with three very special stories.

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Sun, July 24, 2005 - 10:10 PMYeah, well, I WAS a triber for a while, but then didn't figure out how to use the damn thing. THanks, Bridget, for the kick-in-butt reminder email. <g> I've become member 69 (Dudes!) of the Aeon Tribe ...is there a prize or something?
No sales or writing news, but our magazine, TALEBONES, has a new issue just out, #30, available at our site: www.talebones.com
Our book company, Fairwood Press, also has the first novel of fellow-Tribe-mate Jay Lake called ROCKET SCIENCE. www.fairwoodpress.com. Yeah, we're like Bridget & Marti...one website for our ventures ain't enough!
It's summer, so I AM getting a little writing in, despite the numerous projects I'm working on. That's good. I'm into a novel a little ways. Honna's working great guns on one too, and her first is in an agent's hands...
Anyway, good to be here. ~Patrick Swenson -

Rocket Science looks great; I'll have to buy a copy from the Fairwood/Talebones table at Cascadia.
You go, Patrick and Honna. I don't know where youse guys find the time to pursue your writing, but I'm glad you do. Keep doin' it. -

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Sat, August 6, 2005 - 1:34 PMWow. Reading the thread, I find myself in stellar company. I can't believe I've just turned fifty and finally - FINALLY - have stories being published. (Can't believe I'm fifty.) I'd like to imagine this was because my stories were all far ahead of the times, but more likely it's because speculative fiction has finally come into its own. Or because I'm a better writer. But since Margaret Atwood confessed to writing science fiction, what I do seems validated somehow. {g}
I have a novel coming out at the end of the year called "Erasing Sherlock. " And sold a story to an anthology called Modern Magic, which hasn't come out. But it all happened this year. So very much of the good.
I wasn't able to look at the preview and the link doesn't get me to a page with Aeon Four. -

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Sun, August 7, 2005 - 6:54 AMHowdy folks! Just wrapping up a weekend with Ken Rand in town. He's been a delightful guest. Jen and I crashed his "From Idea to Story in 90 Seconds" class at the Willamette Writers Conference -- it's the best presentation I've ever seen on how to pull down story ideas and translate them into stories and of course, we've filled in all the time-gaps with shop talk and witty repartee.
In other news, sold a story to Son & Foe for their premiere issue. (Patrick, it was one I wrote for TB Live one year.
So will I be seeing any of you co-Northwesterners at the WotF Awards Ceremony on the 19th? I'm pretty jazzed up and it looks like they have an action packed week for us. I'm catching a train up on Friday 8/12, Jen is following by car on the 17th. If I don't see you then, I'll be at Cascadia. -
-
Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Tue, August 9, 2005 - 3:01 AMKen,
Ken told me he was hanging with you guys. Yeah, the Idea to Story thing is pretty nifty. I designed and typeset the print version for him. Of COURSE you bought a copy from him....
It'll be interesting to see how things go with Son & Foe. (Don't tell Honna, but I slid a story of hers out to them on the sly. Heck, sometimes I have to do it. <g>)
Hey, see you at WotF. We'll be there, barring any unforseen calamities. Right now Honna's mom is in the hospital, been there over a week now. We've had to postpone our summer trip to Montana one week, and now it may not happen at all, or it just might be going so I can see family.
-
-
Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Wed, August 10, 2005 - 6:12 AMGlad you've got WotF on your calendar! Sorry to hear about Honna's mom.
The book is fantastic, naturally...and combined with the class, it's pretty powerful stuff. I rarely struggle to find ideas but this method of his is excellent.
See you soon!
-
-
Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Fri, August 19, 2005 - 12:12 AMYou know about Ken's next book too, the print version of THE EDITOR IS IN, which I've also designed and set for him. Somebody I know has a nice testimonial blurb on the back cover. <vbg>. Anyway, it's at the printer now; I'm actually pretty pleased with the way this one turned out. -
-
Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Sat, August 20, 2005 - 7:40 AMYep. I heard about that one...and Ken told me about the blurb. It was SO great to see you and Honna out at the ceremony/signing last night. I could've never had that experience if it hadn't been for that class you two taught and the stories you bought. Thanks again! -
-
Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Sat, August 20, 2005 - 1:41 PMIt was a great event. I always knew the Writers of the Future thing was major glitzy, but I didn't realize HOW glitzy! But you all had a chance to shine. Even if you did forget to thank us. <vbg> Seriously, congrats on the success. No one can stop you now!
And it was worth hearing Tim Powers call Aeon Triber Jay Lake "filthy." :) -
-
Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Sun, August 21, 2005 - 9:07 AMYeah, I still feel pretty terrible about that. For those just joining us, I had prepared remarks listing Patick and Honna at the very top of my thank you's because they not only taught me how to write in their class but also bought my first story. Of course, I utterly blanked. As a matter of fact, what many people thought was a pause for dramatic effect before thanking my wife was actually me trying to figure out who I'd forgotten to thank (almost forgot her and I was looking right at her!)
Lesson learned: Use the cards. Shiny lights and a row of SF legends can be quite disarming. : ) -
-

Sun, August 21, 2005 - 9:32 PM<<listing Patick and Honna at the very top of my thank you's because they not only taught me how to write in their class but also bought my first story.>>
But Ken, you already knew how to write. We just nudged you a little bit. What did WE teach you that you didn't already know a little? :) (Hey, maybe we should hear what it WAS, since it's been so long ago, haha) -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Mon, August 22, 2005 - 7:31 AMThat class gave my writing structure. POV, first-sentence hooks, the importance of the Satisfactory Reading Experience, playing fair with the reader, all stuff I'd not thought about at all. I used to just go write with little forethought about these things.
It was such an impactful class that I took it twice in a row. And it didn't hurt that we wrote stories each week that you and Honna critiqued. My writing quality surged forward and I started selling short stories. I think I've sold three or four of the stories written in that class.
So hey...Talebones Live at Cascadia??? If so, sign me up...just let me know what length.
By the way, nice to see you here Dave! (Dave's the fella that said "Ken, send Writers of the Future THIS story -- it's sure to win.)

Cool. THAT's what we were doing. I thought it was something like that. <vbg> Glad we could help.
And so everyone knows, Ken redeemed himself at Nasfic for not mentioning us at the Writers of the Future awards ceremony. On a panel he had with James Van Pelt, Toni Weisskopf and Louise Marley, he said so many good things about us, that I got a little misty-eyed. It was a good con for us: a lot of positive mentions, validation, and great sales. -

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Sat, September 10, 2005 - 7:11 AMWell, you and Honna are exceptional people. And Talebones/Fairwood Press is worthy of its accolades. Glad we crossed paths up there. Will you be at Orycon or is World Fantasy stealing you away? -
-
Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Wed, September 14, 2005 - 9:03 PMUnclear yet. Cloudy, the future is. ;)
We're signed up for Orycon--er, I think; I've not heard a word from them--but who knows what'll happen?
Not going to V-con next weekend? We might get up there--we think we might have a student of mine interested in doing the nanny thing again. -

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Fri, September 16, 2005 - 3:09 PMNope...no V-Con or Foolscap, alas. We're just all tuckered out from WotF and Cascadia combined with everyday life. We'll be at Orycon for sure though...think John's coming down for that, too. And we'll be at Radcon and Norwescon for sure.
There's talk of me heading down to Worldcon next year, too, since it's so close.

The excellent company I keep makes it look that way, I'm sure. : )
I'm looking forward to Cascadia. I have a noon reading on Friday for anyone out there interested -- I'll be reading the story I wrote at the WotF workshop, "Making My Entrance Again With My Usual Flair" -- a humorous SF tale. I'll give a hint -- they give out objects for us to use in our stories and they send us out to interview strangers. My object was a tiny three-eyed monkey. My stranger was a homeless clown.
And tell Jessie I'm bringing the guitar this time....

I have, in the past few weeks, sold a load of poetry to various folks. And learned my novel is going to be called "Curse's Captive" (it's not a racy book, I promise!)
But I am not in as awesome a place as Missy -- she is justifiably floating near the ceiling.

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Sun, August 21, 2005 - 9:29 PMIt DOES have a good cover, Melissa. Who did the artwork for it? -
-
Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Mon, August 22, 2005 - 10:33 AMI think Deron Douglas, the Double Dragon editor, did the art. Lazette said that he does most of it.
They asked me what I wanted for the artwork, too. From what I hear that's not at all typical, especially with a newbie's first book. They're great people.
Oh, and Jenny's not giving herself enough credit. I've read her books, and she's got a level of skill I'm still reaching for. I just got lucky and found a home for mine first. -

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Wed, October 5, 2005 - 10:09 PMI just sold a 15,000 word novelette, The Dope Fiend, to Ellen Datlow at Sci Fiction. Should be up sometime after December.
I also sold a short story, High Noon in Clown Town, to Peter Crowther for Postscripts magazine for a late 2006 publication.
And my novella, An Occupation of Angels, will be coming out in paperback in the UK on the 2nd of December (launched at the British Fantasy Society's Christmas open night in London). Liz Williams did the introduction, and there are some very nice blurbs from Michael Marshall Smith and others.
I also have an anthology I edited - A Dick & Jane Primer for Adults - scheduled for next year for publication by the British Fantasy Society, but there's still some work to be done there.
Rockin'!

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Thu, October 6, 2005 - 11:20 AMDamn, Lavie, that IS impressive. I'd say amazing, but I've read "Midnight Folk," (that's the story of Lavie's that will appear in Aeon Six) and I already knew you were amazing.
To all the rest of you: Lavie and I ran into one another quite unexpectedly at a party at The Arches in Glasgow given by a publisher (the brain cell to which I mapped the name has been erased in the interim, but it's whatever one my mate Darren Nash now acquires sf for) during worldcon. I saw this very interesting looking bloke sitting at the next table, so I glanced at the namebadge, as one does, et voilá! Instant author-editor meeting. It was too loud to chat much, but now we'll recognize one another at the next bash.

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Mon, October 10, 2005 - 7:23 AMSome more news. I sold a story to _Fantasy Magazine_, the new one from Sean Wallace at Prime Books, set to debut at this year's World Fantasy Convention. Prime is also scheduled to publish my second collection, WORSHIPING SMALL GODS, in 2006. -

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Mon, October 10, 2005 - 10:23 AMVery cool! Will you be at WFC to share the glory? We won't, but we'll be kicking back at OryCon in Portland. -

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Mon, October 10, 2005 - 11:51 AMNot this year, alas. Maybe next year in Austin.

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Sun, October 16, 2005 - 10:17 AMNo you at WFC? And no Richard? Bummer. I haven't seen Richard for *ages*. In fact, how new is the beard?
Well, I have a draft of the fistulated cow story done, but I haven't had time to work on it since. I've got a couple of reviews coming out at Strange Horizons and maybe an article, which might be kind of a dumb thing to agree to do, seeing as how they're siphoning off time from fiction. I'm going to have to back off that stuff. Another bummer. Huge physics test Tuesday that I'm going to die in, take-home test in linear algebra given to us Friday, sister shows up Saturday for a week, Sunday I run a half marathon (oh, yeah--check this out--

And the test is due Monday. I hope I survive until WFC.

Mon, October 17, 2005 - 6:46 AMActually, the beard is old and, in the current political speak, "no longer operative." It's just that I've yet to find a picture I like better. :)

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Mon, October 17, 2005 - 3:25 PMAwesome! Er, on the sale to SH, I mean, not those nasty ol' rejections. -
-
Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Tue, October 18, 2005 - 12:47 PMAbsolutely true. SH is a great market, and any week you have a five-to-one ratio of rejections to sales can't be all bad.
Yer an awesome bunch altogether.

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Wed, November 2, 2005 - 10:37 AMMy story in the latest issue of Abyss & Apex got a glowing review in Tangent Online! It's a relief to have positive feedback in the very first review of my fiction. -

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Thu, November 3, 2005 - 10:40 AMWell, my reviews haven't been great lately, but I DID just crack Interzone. :-) -

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Thu, November 3, 2005 - 3:19 PMWe were just discussing the questionable review of "Copper Angels." The reviewer didn't seem to understand that the narrator was about six years old. And he also thought "End of Day" was about dragons, and we have NO idea where he might have got that impression. So take it in context... -

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Wed, November 9, 2005 - 2:05 PMSorry, been rather busy with Court, Writing and All...
Let's see.
Aoife's Kiss has my story "Like the Night" in its September 2005 print issue.
Five Star Mystery just bought my collaboration with Selina Rosen BAD LANDS which is a Gonzo Murder Mystery best described as CSI in Drag and Medium on Sterioids work together to stay alive on Survivor...
Five Star is also going to be publishing my fantasy novel THE HOUNDS OF ARDAGH in October 2006.
My novel DRAGON'S TONGUE is forthcoming from Meisha Merlin in APril 2006. Its sequel WANDERING LARK is due out the following year.
Farthing bought my short story "The Eyes Have It," a tale of kitchen wenches, wizards and potatoes...
Is that too much? ;-)

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Thu, November 3, 2005 - 4:23 PMOh, I giggled about the review about five minutes after reading it, no sweat there. :-) And thanks for the congrats on the Interzone sale. They had two stories and almost took both. But you know, I'll definitely settle for one.

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Sun, January 1, 2006 - 1:33 AMI'm delighted to say that I have made another sale to F&SF. After a long wait, a significant re-write and then a much shorter wait, Gordon Van Gelder has decided that he likes my novella "The Darkness Between". Don't know yet when it's going to be out (not for months probably) but I've got the cheque and I've got the contract and those are two things which always let me feel that maybe I CAN do this writing thing after all. -

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Sun, January 1, 2006 - 4:59 PMWoohoo! Happy New Year! :)

Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Tue, January 3, 2006 - 10:52 PMA NOVELLA to F&SF??? Yeah, I'd say you can do this. Very good news, Jeremy. You've gotta know what an accomplishment that is. -
-
Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Thu, January 5, 2006 - 2:49 PM> You've gotta know what an accomplishment that is.
I guess so, but it's kind of funny, you always tend to down-play your own achievements. It's kind of like "if I can do it then anyone can do it". -
-
Re: AeTribers News, anyone?
Fri, January 6, 2006 - 12:19 AMTime to get a new internal dialogue, Jeremy. We can't go around telling ourselves we're inadequate, or we're going to believe it, and that would never do. So take a look at that contract and tell yourself that you done GOOD.
